HOT Training
Some of the most important work HOT carries out throughout the year is capacity building training for those who work with homeless or at risk young people. This training aims to provide workers with the confidence and knowledge to engage young people in effective proactive discussion about sexual health on a broad level, from basic STI information and transmission prevention, sexual health and legal issues, right through to self esteem and body image.
HOT offers trainings on a regular basis to services across New South Wales. Each year we aim to run at least two regional training road shows, covering three to five locations. In 2009 these trainings were run in the Hunter New England Area (covering Taree, Maitland, Moree, Tamworth and Inverell) and the Greater West Area (covering Walgett, Dubbo and Orange). These trainings are run in conjunction with local services and the HIV and Related Programs Unit in each area. In 2010, HOT is planning a road show to the Far North Coast and Greater Southern District of New South Wales. For services with questions or comments about this training please email hot@yaa.com.au. In 2009 HOT also ran trainings in Wollongong, Newcastle and Nowra.
Each year we also run a number of trainings within the Sydney Metropolitan Area. Locations in 2009 included Fairfield, Liverpool, Campbelltown, Kings Cross, Mt. Druitt and Newtown. These trainings run with the assistance of local health services, or Area Health Service HIV and Related Programs Units and are often specialised to meet the needs of a local area. Information about these trainings is regularly distributed through youth networks and will also be featured on HOT’s Sexual Health on the Agenda blog.
The staff of the HOT Project can also run specialised trainings for services, or groups of services. Many services have taken HOT up on this to capacity build workers in using our HOT Game and One 2 One resource, while other services have booked longer, more detailed sessions. HOT is able to tailor trainings to suit the needs of individual services. Training fees are negotiated on a case by case basis, but average at around $20 per participant. If your service or interagency is interested in a HOT Training, please read the list of training activities available and the training request form.
